Noun's Behaviour( part-1)

  • Behaviour of Nouns

To study the behaviour of Nouns, they should be put in following groups:
Group 1-  this group includes those nouns nouns which are always used in plurals. A list of such now is given below;

Riches, Premises, Spectacles, Bowels, Valuables, Proceeds, Alms, Billiards, Movables, Wages, Annals, Measles, Trousers, Goods, Shocks, Fetters, Shorts, Pantaloons Tidings ,Mumps, Eatables, Scissors, Stockings Surroundings, Breeches , Tongs.

Examples-
A) Riches have wings.
Riches in the above sentence means ‘wealth' and not ‘ many rich men'. The word ‘Riches' has its independent existence and is always used in plural. So , we have used a plural verb ( have) with it.
:-) Likewise we always say;
B) Give me a pair of scissors.
C) My Spectacles have been broken.
Group 2-
 This group includes those nouns that look like plural, but are used in the singular. A list of such nouns is given below:

 mathematics, physics, statistics, news, economics, innings, politics, gymnastics, gallows, mechanics, summons, classics.

Examples-
A) Mathematics is a difficult subject.
Mathematics looks like plural but, on fact,it is singular. So, we can not use plural verb(are) with it.
:-) likewise we always say-
B) Politics is a dirty game .
C) This was the breaking news of yesterday.
*Note- 5 interesting facts about Noun-
1) ‘Cousin' is never followed by ‘brother' or ‘sister'.
2) ‘Poor people' is a slang use. It should be ‘the poor'.
3) ‘Boarding' is a wrong use . It should be ‘boarding house'.
4) ‘Signature' should be used in place of the abbreviation ‘sign'.
5) Food taken once is ‘meal' and not ‘meals'. Meals means both ‘ lunch and dinner' and we can't take them together.
